How Fast Can I Get a Certificate of Insurance?

A certificate of insurance (COI) is a one-page document that proves you have active insurance coverage. It lists your policy types, limits, effective dates, and the insurance carrier. It doesn't change your coverage — it just proves it exists.
Think of it as a receipt for your insurance. Clients, landlords, and general contractors request COIs to verify that you're covered before they let you on-site or sign a contract.
Almost every business that works with other businesses will need a COI at some point. Contractors need them for every job. Cleaning companies need them for commercial clients. Consultants need them for enterprise contracts. Landlords require them from tenants. Event venues require them from vendors.
If someone asks you for a COI and you don't have one, it usually means you either don't have insurance or your agency is too slow to issue one. Neither is a good look.
With most traditional agencies, getting a COI can take 2–5 business days. You call, leave a message, wait for a callback, explain what you need, and then wait for the document to be emailed.
At risk | x, we issue COIs same-day. Text us what you need, and we'll have it in your inbox before end of business. If you need an additional insured endorsement (which many contracts require), that's typically same-day too.
Many contracts require you to add the hiring party as an 'additional insured' on your policy. This gives them certain rights under your policy if a claim arises from your work. It's standard practice in construction, consulting, and property management.
Adding an additional insured is a simple endorsement to your existing policy. It doesn't cost much (sometimes nothing), but it does require your agency to process it. Speed matters here — if you can't produce the endorsement, you can't start the job.
