A Salon Owner's $180K Professional Liability Defense

A high-end salon in Los Angeles employed six stylists and two estheticians. The salon specialized in color treatments and chemical straightening services, generating approximately $650K in annual revenue.

The owner carried general liability insurance but had been told by a previous agent that it covered 'everything.' Professional liability (errors & omissions) had never been discussed.

A client received a chemical straightening treatment and experienced severe scalp irritation followed by significant hair loss over the following weeks. A dermatologist attributed the hair loss to chemical burns from the treatment.

The client filed a lawsuit alleging negligence and seeking $180,000 in damages — medical treatment costs, emotional distress, and lost income (the client was a model). The salon's general liability carrier declined the claim, stating that professional services rendered by licensed cosmetologists fall under professional liability, not general liability.

When we onboarded this salon, we immediately identified the professional liability gap. We placed a professional liability policy with $500K per-occurrence limits specifically endorsed for cosmetology and esthetic services.

The policy covered defense costs in addition to (not as part of) the coverage limit — meaning the full $500K was available for settlement even after legal fees. We also added product liability coverage for the chemical products used in treatments.

The professional liability policy covered the entire defense. The case settled for $85,000 — well within policy limits. Legal defense costs of $42,000 were covered separately and did not reduce the available coverage.

The annual premium for the professional liability policy was $1,400. Without it, the salon owner would have paid $127,000 out of pocket — nearly 20% of annual revenue.
